What Happens When You Unfriend Someone on Facebook?

When you unfriend someone on Facebook, the friend connection is removed. You are no longer listed as Facebook friends, and friend-only content may stop being visible between the two accounts.
Unfriending is not the same as blocking, unfollowing, restricting, or deleting a conversation.

The other person is removed from your friends list, and you are removed from theirs. Facebook does not normally send a direct unfriend notification.
What the other person may notice
They may notice if they visit your profile and see Add Friend instead of a friend status. They may also notice if your posts stop appearing because they were set to friends only.
On mobile, the change usually shows up in the profile header: the Add Friend button replaces the friend status. Friend-only posts and photos may also stop appearing in their feed. The exact layout changes often, so the button and the content access are more reliable signs than a specific menu label.
